With the tragedy that transcended in the desert, we all know and have heard plenty on the survivor story of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (So, glad she is doing better everyday).
Although, like many of you I want to know a little more on the other six individuals who were not as fortunate as the Mrs. Giffords. Who were they? The news tends to do this a lot, they fixate on the most popular individuals and tend to drown out the rest. For example, I'm sure we are all familiar with headline similar to...."Rep. Giffords and six others shot!" I'm sure we've all seem them.
Well, I wanted to dedicate a post to the other six victims.
I'll start with what seems to be the second most popular victim, 9 year old Christina Green. Her picture has been plastered everywhere as well as her correlation with the movie based on the children born on September 11, 2001. Christina Green was a straight A student with hopes of one day being involved with the country's political process. In addition, the young girl was an extraordinary athlete. She was the only girl on an all boys baseball team. One of her dreams was to be the first women MLB player. Her father, who is a recruiter for the Los Angeles Dodgers, knew his daughter was special and had the potential to become anything she desired. Definitely, Christina Green will be someone the world will miss out on. Soul's like hers are what this world needs. Such a shame that someone so beautiful met with something so horrific.
Phyllis Schneck, 79.
Originally a native from New Jersey Phyllis was a "snow-bird" who only spent winters in Arizona. Her daughter was quoted saying her mother was not politically active, but wanted to attend the even thrown by Rep. Giffords. Mrs. Schneck, who married her high school sweet heart (56 years) and outlived him, dedicated her time to her church and sewing. She loved to cook and had no enemies in the world.
Dorothy Morris, 76
The homemaker, mother of two also known as "Dot", who was nothing but loving and caring according to all her friends interviewed. Is survived by her high school sweetheart husband, George Morris.
Gabriel Zimmerman, 30
Director of community outreach for Rep. Gabrielle Gifford, was described as a "natural networker." Before the shooting began Gabriel was interviewing members of the community. Gabriel was recently engaged to a nurse and was set to be married this spring.
Dorwan Stoddard, 76
A retired road-grader, loved to travel and enjoy life. He and an old classmate reconnected, Mavy Terry, after both had been widowed and found an instant connection. They married in 1996 and both had four children from their previous marriages. Dorwan had attended the event to thank Rep. Gifford for her work. As the shooting began Dorwan threw himself on-top of Mavy to shield her from danger, and he was ultimately shot. Mavy, who is now recovering from gun shot wounds to her legs, said her time with Dorwan was the best 15 years of her life.
John Roll, 63 (Chief Federal Judge)
Another victim who is a bit more famous than the aforementioned, John Roll was known to be just and fair. He never let politics interfere in the way he treated any individual. He had received previous death threats in 2009 for allowing illegal immigrants to bring forth a civil rights lawsuit against an Arizona rancher. Roll was known for civility and fairness. On the day of the shooting Roll decided to stop by and say hello to Giffords after attending Mass.
Truly a tragedy.
Chub Out!
