La migra is coming, La migra is coming.....okay, so maybe Chipotle's experience was not like the experience Cheech Marin had in the movie, "Born in East L.A.," but they are definitely going to feel the repercussions of their actions in the morning.
A crackdown on its immigrant labor force has Chipotle firing hundreds of it's alleged illegal workers in the Minnesota area. According to Yahoo! it's about half the staff that Chipotle currently employs in Minnesota. Wowsers!
What's most interesting is that the U.S. knows that most of the food industry staffs a huge amount of illegal workers. The issue is quite touchy when it comes to politics being that Obama will be depending on the Hispanic vote come reelection time. He definitely doesn't want to burn any bridges, but with the country's unemployment rate being what it is I don't think he has a choice.
I have always been an individual that advocates equality and justice for all, but laws are laws, no one should be employed illegally. Now, we all know there are plenty of ways to check the legal status of an employee, so shame on Chipotle for employing so many undocumented workers. I feel that they should be held accountable for their actions whether it be through fines or taxes.
With unemployment being so high in the country incidents like this should not be occurring. If and when Chipotle were following their own model, "food with integrity" they would not be in this mess. What are your thoughts?
