Who Was St. Valentine?
According to Catholic Online, St. Valentine was indeed a real living person. He was actually a priest in Rome, so I'm sure he wasn't wining and dining the ladies all that much. Wait maybe just wining. HA!
He actually assisted the martyrs in the persecution under Claudius II. Due to his faith, which he refused to renounce, Valentine was executed by authorities on February 14.
Like every other story that goes back, way back, there is still uncertainty whether this Valentine was the actual Valentine. Some believe there was more than one Valentine in history, others believe that he wasn't a priest, but actually a bishop. But, everyone agrees that Valentine was indeed a real person.
So how did Valentine's day come to be all about LOVE? According to blog specializing in saints, "some believe the Romans had a mid-February custom where boys drew the names of girls in honour of the sex and fertility goddess, Februata Juno." Others think it derives from "stems from the belief that birds begin to pair on that date."
Whichever is true I am okay with. I love a holiday that can help boost the economy, and encourages people to show their love for one another all at the same time.
