Explaining that all UPS drivers are not allowed to make left turns. It's sounds a bit crazy when you think about a DRIVER delivering packages all over the city reaching his destination without making a left turn, doesn't it?
Well that is exactly what UPS drivers do, or don't do, and here are the reasons why.....
1. Safety: Having to cross through traffic while driving is more dangerous than having to make a right hand turn. I think we all know this is pretty much true, but how do you get to where you need to be without that occasional left? I'll answer this shortly.
2. Efficiency: Seems that making only right hand turns not only saves money, but actually saves time. How much?
Answers:
1) Engineers at UPS have designed a GPS software that will route any destination for the driver with an only right hand turn route. So, their GPS works differently than the normal GPS, which will in fact tell you to turn left and make U turns (legally) as well.
2) After implementing this method of Right Hand Turns only, UPS is now saving about 20 million a year because of it. In addition, they've been able to deliver 350,000 more packages per year. Think about it.....when you turn left you tend to have to wait for oncoming traffic to clear before you turn. Most of the time (if heavy traffic) you are stuck waiting for two or three lights to pass until you get to the front of the left turn lane to actually turn. Crazy!
Kudos to UPS for figuring this out. It's always good to see innovation happening. I think I am going to reroute my work route with only right turns now. I wonder if it will shave some time off of my driving.
Chub Out!
And in a related story, a recent poll shows that 98% of NASCAR fans either work or have family or friends who work for UPS.
