Rap Has Changed
Recently I started to really pay attention to Rap music. I looked at it as a whole meaning the music itself, the artists, the influence it has on the world and my love for it. Rap has definitely evolved but at the same time taken steps back. We have seen the influence that rap music has had on practically everything in the world like fashion, food, and entertainment. All in all that is great but it seems that mainstream rap which is what we hear on the radio and on many ad campaigns has put a dent in the rap game. It seems like the majority of rap music I hear on the radio is R&B music or something trying to teach me how to dance. Its a given that the songs are catchy and you will catch yourself later on in the day singing the hook of the song but you have to wonder what happen to rap music.
I think back to when I was in high school when we had rap artists like Notorious BIG, Tupac, Dr Dre, Outkast (before they got weird), Wu-Tang Clan, and a young Jay-Z and they took rap to a whole different level. They brought rap music to the public and we all got to witness the beginning of something great. The beats and the lyrics at that time were amazing. You had albums like The Chronic, Ready to Die, and All Eyes on Me that would let you sit back and listen to every track on it.
Now we have nothing but love songs on the radio. What the hell? Do I have to really hear Lil Wayne rap about Lollipops or have the Cali Swag District teach me how to Dougie? I don’t want to do the Dougie! I just want to hear good music! It sounds like the “PC” people are trying to get some kind of control of the rap industry. I remember a part in the intro to the “Wu-Tang Clan Forever” album where the Rza says “ A lot of (people) trying to take Hip Hop and make that R&B, rap and bullshit yaknowwhatI’msaying or make the shit Funk, **** that!” That line caught my attention back in 1997 and now I see what he meant by that. I never thought there would be a time that rap music would not be my favorite type of music. Things have change since my high school days and I still like rap music but I didn’t know that some rap artists like this little guy name Wayne would have a effect on my love for rap music.
