Can you imagine...getting sentenced to 10 years in prison over $31 of Mary Jane (marijuana). The reason why I think this story is very interesting is not because of the sentencing, but because the time of sentence when compared to the time of sentence in other crimes. For example, people accused of rape and found guilty can serve as little as 5 years in prison. Yet, a women who sold $31 worth of marijuana gets to spend 10 years of her life behind bars? Something just doesn't seem right to me when I hear news like this.
Patricia Marilyn Spottedcrow was convicted of selling marijuana to an undercover cop. Her and her mother thought it was an easy way of making a little side money without really harming anyone, FAIL! Patricia's mother was also involved in the sale of marijuana (2 total sales were made, 1 for $11 by Grams, and the other of $20 by Patricia) and was sentenced to 30-year suspended sentence, with five years of drug and alcohol assessments.
Patricia was quoted saying, "It just seemed like easy money," said Spottedcrow, who says she is not a drug user but has smoked marijuana. "I thought we could get some extra money. I've lost everything because of it."
Now, let me be perfectly clear if the two women broke the law then they must pay for their crimes, but it just doesn't seem fair when a rapist can get off with less time than someone who sold $31 worth of Mary Jane. What do you think?
